5 Frequently Asked Laser Hair Removal Questions

1. Are lasers good for permanent hair removal?

Yes. The heat from the laser destroys the ability of the hair follicle to grow back. However, several treatments may be necessary for permanent hair removal and results vary by individual even when the same laser is used. Laser hair removal is additive. That is, the more treatments you get the more permanent the hair removal will be. We’ve heard about a few cases where some people fail to respond to laser hair removal; the hair returns regardless of number of sessions. Unfortunately, you won’t know if you’re a non-responder until you’ve tried a laser hair treatment.

2. Is laser hair removal painful?

Laser hair removal is generally not a painful procedure. It often feels like a quick pinch but at times you may feel more pain than this, therefore you might want to use a numbing cream or take an anti-inflammatory before a treatment session.
3. What is Vaniqa?

Vaniqa is a prescription cream for all skin types that has been clinically proven to reduce the growth of unwanted facial hair, often within eight weeks.

It is not a hair removal cream: Vaniqa slows down the rate at which your hair grows, so you do not have to remove it as often.

4. Does laser hair removal work with dark skin tone?

Lasers target melanin or the pigmentation in your hair follicle that surrounds the structure responsible for producing hair growth. The more melanin you have the more difficult it is for the laser’s energy to pass through the skin to get to the hair follicle. Therefore, if you have dark-toned skin you may not be a good candidate for laser hair removal. In most cases more treatments sessions are necessary.

To make sure the treatments are done properly, you will need to find a laser treatment center that has expertise in performing laser hair removal on people with darker skin tones. Instead of laser hair removal, you might want to consider one of the alternatives to laser hair removal such as electrolysis or waxing.
5. Why do I have more unwanted hair as I get older?

Every woman has both female and male hormones in their body. As women age, their bodies begin to produce more male hormones or androgens. Androgens may cause hair growth to increase, or coarser, darker hair to grow in places where it may not have been growing before, such as the upper lip or chin.

In the News:

Barbara Walters News Special: On 60 Minutes, Dr. Christoph Wesphal explains that Resveratrol is a naturally occurring component of red wine that can apparently extend human life.

WebMD: Resveratrol may prolong life and fight age-related diseases.

Resveratrol is one of a group of antioxidant compounds called polyphenols found in red wine that has been reported to have anti-inflammatory as well as anticancer properties.

Resveratrol may counter type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance, a new study shows.

CNN: At high doses, resveratrol appears to prolong life spans and improve health in mice. Human trials are under way.

This research, funded in part by the National Institute on Aging, was published in the journals Nature and Call in November, and bottles of resveratrol have been flying off the shelves since. Dr. Brent Bauer, director of the Department of Internal Medicine's Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program at Mayo Clinic says "This may be the best thing since sliced bread for human beings, but we just don't know yet."

Fox News: For years, red wine has been linked to numerous health benefits. But the new study, published online in the journal Nature on Thursday, shows that mammals given ultrahigh doses of resveratrol can get the good effects of cutting calories without actually doing it.

"If we're right about this, it would mean you could have the benefit of restricting calories without having to feel hungry," Sinclair said. "It's the Holy Grail of aging research."
